Electrical Services Built for Atascadero's Needs

Atascadero sits along the US-101 corridor between San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles in the heart of SLO County's North County. The city has a character all its own — a planned community laid out by E.G. Lewis in the 1910s with its distinctive Sunken Gardens park and Colony Park neighborhood, surrounded by oak woodland hills that give way to rural ranchland beyond the city grid. Electrical needs in Atascadero reflect its mix of older Colony Park homes, mid-century residential neighborhoods along El Camino Real and Curbaril Avenue, newer construction in the northern foothills, and a growing rural residential community on Creston Road and surrounding areas. Many homes in the established neighborhoods carry 100-amp service panels that are increasingly inadequate for modern electrical loads — EV chargers, solar systems, heat pumps, and smart home infrastructure. Permits for Atascadero city properties go through the City of Atascadero Community Development Department. Rural properties outside city limits fall under SLO County jurisdiction. MAG Electric serves all of Atascadero and the Templeton and Santa Margarita communities nearby.

Client Case Study

Colony Park — Panel Upgrade for Whole-Home Electrification

The Situation

A Colony Park homeowner on Palomar Avenue in Atascadero contacted MAG Electric with plans to add an EV charger, replace their gas dryer with an electric model, and eventually install a heat pump system — a complete home electrification plan that required a serious look at their existing 100-amp service.

Our Approach

The free on-site assessment confirmed the existing panel couldn't support all three additions simultaneously. We provided a phased plan with an immediate 200-amp upgrade and 50-amp EV charger circuit, then roughed in conduit for the future dryer and HVAC circuits so those could be added without opening walls again. All work was permitted through the City of Atascadero Building Division.

The Outcome

The panel upgrade and EV charger installation were completed in two days. The conduit roughed in for future circuits cost a fraction of what it would cost later, saving the homeowner an estimated $1,800 on the subsequent dryer circuit installation three months later. Total first-phase investment was approximately $5,400. The homeowner has since referred two neighbors on Palomar Avenue to MAG Electric.
