Electrical Services Built for Morro Bay's Needs

Morro Bay is defined by the iconic volcanic rock that stands sentinel at the harbor entrance and by a coastal lifestyle that shapes everything from architecture to electrical needs. The community includes a tight-knit residential core on the hill above the embarcadero, the flatter residential streets of the north end along Main Street and Ironwood Avenue, and the commercial fishing and tourism district along the waterfront. Coastal conditions in Morro Bay are more demanding on electrical equipment than the inland communities — the combination of salt air, marine layer humidity, and direct exposure for waterfront properties means outdoor panels, meter bases, and EV charger enclosures need appropriate weatherproof ratings and materials. Los Osos, just south of Morro Bay along Los Osos Valley Road, is served by the same contractors and faces similar coastal electrical challenges. Permits for Morro Bay city properties are handled through the City of Morro Bay Public Services Department. MAG Electric serves all of the Morro Bay and Baywood-Los Osos area, and regularly coordinates with PG&E for service upgrades in this region of SLO County.

Client Case Study

Morro Bay Hillside — Coastal Panel Upgrade and EV Charger

The Situation

A homeowner on Bonita Street in the Morro Bay hillside neighborhood called after their home insurance carrier flagged their original 100-amp service panel and noted it as an underwriting concern. The home was built in 1967 and still had the original service equipment. They also wanted to add a Level 2 EV charger for a newly purchased Ford F-150 Lightning.

Our Approach

The assessment identified that the existing service entry conduit had significant corrosion from decades of marine air exposure. We quoted the 200-amp panel upgrade, a new service entry conduit run with marine-rated materials appropriate for the coastal environment, and a 50-amp EV charger circuit with an outdoor-rated, IP55-rated charger enclosure. All work was permitted through the City of Morro Bay Public Services Department.

The Outcome

The panel upgrade, service entry replacement, and EV charger installation were completed over two days. The homeowner's insurance carrier confirmed the policy underwriting concern was resolved following the permitted upgrade. The Ford Lightning charges overnight at full speed. Total project investment was approximately $7,600, which the homeowner offset partially with a PG&E EV rebate of $800.
