Electrical Services Built for SLO's Unique Market

San Luis Obispo's housing stock spans everything from Victorian-era homes near downtown and Mission Plaza to Cal Poly-adjacent rentals along Murray and California Streets, newer construction in the Laguna Lake area, and rural properties spreading out toward Edna Valley along Orcutt Road. Each segment presents different electrical challenges — and different permit requirements through the City of SLO Community Development Department.

The SLO market has one of the highest per-capita EV adoption rates in California, driven in part by Cal Poly's sustainability focus and the broader environmental consciousness of the community. We install Level 2 EV chargers throughout the 93401 and 93405 zip codes, including coordination with SoCal Edison where applicable in eastern portions of the county.

MAG Electric also handles commercial electrical for SLO's thriving downtown business district along Higuera Street, Monterey Street, and the Broad Street corridor, where tenant improvements and lighting upgrades are common as properties change hands.

Client Case Study

Laguna Lake Neighborhood — Panel Upgrade and EV Charger Installation

The Situation

A homeowner off Los Osos Valley Road in the Laguna Lake area of San Luis Obispo had purchased a Rivian R1S and needed a Level 2 charger installed. The home had a 125-amp panel from the 1980s with limited capacity and was in an area covered by the SLO City Building Division for permits.

Our Approach

The site assessment revealed available panel space for a 50-amp circuit — just barely. Rather than squeeze in a charger that would leave no headroom, we recommended upgrading to a 200-amp panel first, then adding the Rivian-compatible Level 2 charger on a properly sized dedicated circuit. We pulled both permits with the City of SLO Building Division simultaneously.

The Outcome

Both projects were completed over two days with a single inspection sign-off. The homeowner now charges their Rivian overnight at full speed and has ample panel capacity for a future solar system. Total investment was approximately $6,200. The upgraded panel also added value flagged in a subsequent refinance appraisal.

Electrical Questions in San Luis Obispo

The City of San Luis Obispo Building Division at 919 Palm Street handles permits for properties within city limits. Properties in unincorporated SLO County — which includes many addresses in Edna Valley, Dalidio area, and rural routes — fall under SLO County Department of Planning and Building. We determine the right jurisdiction for your address and handle the permit application completely.
SLO follows California's AB 1236 streamlined EV permitting law, which requires most jurisdictions to process EV charger permit applications within three business days of a complete submission. The city has been proactive about EV infrastructure. We handle the permit application and coordination — most of our SLO installs go from permit application to inspection sign-off within two weeks.
San Luis Obispo is approximately 30 miles north of our Santa Maria base on Betteravia Road — about 35 minutes via US-101. We regularly serve SLO homeowners and businesses and factor travel into our project scheduling. For larger commercial projects or multiple-day jobs, we coordinate around minimizing mobilization costs so SLO clients get the same competitive pricing as our local Santa Maria customers.
Yes. Most of San Luis Obispo falls within the 3CE (Central Coast Community Energy) service territory, which administers the Electrify Your Ride program offering up to $2,000 toward EV charger installations. PG&E offers $800 for qualifying residential EVSE, and the federal 30C tax credit covers 30% of installation costs up to $1,000. Check with 3CE directly for current eligibility — programs are updated periodically.
