Federal Pacific Panel Replaced.
Tesla Charger Added. One Day. Done.

A Santa Maria homeowner needed a Tesla Wall Connector installed before their car arrived. A site visit revealed a Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panel with no available breaker space, double-tapped circuits, and a corroded weatherhead. We replaced everything in a single permitted project and had them charging on day one of ownership.

The Situation

The homeowners had purchased a Tesla Model Y and scheduled delivery for a Friday. They called MAG Electric on a Tuesday asking whether we could install a Tesla Wall Connector in the garage by end of week. When Matthew arrived for the free site assessment on Wednesday morning, it took about four minutes to identify the real problem.

The existing panel was a Federal Pacific Stab-Lok unit, a 100-amp service installed in 1972. Every breaker slot was occupied, with two slots showing double-tapping (two wires sharing one breaker, a code violation). The service weatherhead had visible corrosion at the mast fitting. There was no capacity for a 50-amp EV charger circuit, and the panel itself presented documented fire risks independent of the charger project.

"Matthew was upfront from the start. He could have just told me we needed a bigger panel and given me a number. Instead he walked me through exactly why the Federal Pacific was a problem and showed me the double-tapped breakers himself. I trusted him immediately."

Our Approach

After the site assessment, Matthew provided a written fixed-price quote covering three scopes: the 200-amp Square D panel replacement, weatherhead repair and new service entry conduit, and a dedicated 50-amp circuit for the Tesla Wall Connector with a weatherproof box at the garage location.

We filed the permit with the City of Santa Maria Building Division on Wednesday afternoon. The Building Division processed the standard residential service upgrade permit by Thursday morning, allowing us to schedule the full project for the same day.

  • Filed city permit Wednesday, approved Thursday morning
  • New 200-amp Square D panel with 40-space load center
  • Service weatherhead replacement and new conduit run to meter base
  • All double-tapped circuits corrected with proper breaker allocation
  • 50-amp dedicated circuit to garage on new 2-pole breaker
  • Tesla Wall Connector Gen 3 mounted at homeowner-selected height
  • All circuits labeled on new panel directory

Permit and Inspection

Electrical permit work in Santa Maria requires a final inspection by the City Building Division. We scheduled the inspection for the morning following project completion. The inspector reviewed the panel work, verified the service entry, confirmed breaker labeling, and signed off on the Tesla charger circuit. The inspection passed on the first visit with no corrections.

The Outcome

Project Results

  • Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panel fully removed and replaced
  • All code violations resolved: double-taps, corroded weatherhead
  • Tesla Model Y charging at full 48-amp speed the night of delivery
  • Homeowner insurance carrier removed the panel flag on renewal
  • 200-amp service ready for future solar and battery storage
  • Total timeline from first call to inspection sign-off: 3 business days

The total project investment was $5,400, including all labor, materials, and permit fees. The homeowner subsequently applied for the PG&E EVSE rebate of $800, bringing net out-of-pocket cost to approximately $4,600.

"The car arrived Friday evening and was charging that night. Three days from 'we have a problem' to 'we have a solution' with a city-inspected permit. MAG Electric delivered exactly what they said they would at the price they quoted."
